Crepitus

Why are my joint make strange noises?

Many people complain of their joints making noises such as, popping, cracking, clunking, snapping, grating, and grinding.  These noises may cause you concern and you may feel worried about what is causing it.   You may try to avoid it by changing the way you move.  Many people inform us that they have stopped the activity that causes the noises, such as climbing the stairs, gardening, or swimming.  They have ideas of severe arthritis or that something is wrong.

Such noises are known as Crepitus and not all these noises are as bad as they sound.  There are many different causes and reasons for crepitus, some of which will require treatment, and some won't.

So, what causes the crepitus?

The most common cause is gas bubbles that pop within the joint. The gas bubbles may appear when a joint is stretched and released.

Ligaments or tendons may snap over bony structures. This can sometimes cause pain and is commonly found around the hip (snapping hip syndrome). This is usually nothing of concern with regards to the joint itself but would require assessment and treatment of the soft tissues surrounding the joint from a qualified practitioner.

Finally, arthritis may be the cause of clicking, popping, and grinding within a joint. By liaising with a qualified practitioner, you will be able to understand the nature of such noises and following an assessment, you will be given some management strategies and ways to maintain range of movement and muscle power, both of which could reduce crepitus.

Often prescribed exercise can help with all of the above along with extra benefits to mental health, cardiovascular function and overall wellbeing.
